Muku Mania: a documentation of the progress of my BFA senior thesis project at PNCA

For my senior thesis at The Pacific Northwest College of Art, I will be exploring the theme of narrative through the creation of a line of products. By placing a quirky and lovable character into context and providing an array of applications, each item will appeal to my target audience through light-hearted and innovative design.

Here are a few images from my thesis proposal power point slideshow at PNCA, for those of you who didn't get a chance to come :)
My pitch went well and I passed with flying colors! Now I am to get started on my Muku the cyclops owl product line and start diving into the magical land of Krystallos Island, where Mount Kruos stands tall, exotic plants blossom from the Curious Garden, the blue whale sings, the forever cloud keeps on raining in its favorite spot, the crystal caves shine on, and the bog of banishment bubbles on in the eerie plateau...

Muku the Cyclops Owl

In my senior year at PNCA, I have been constructing the basic foundation of my thesis project.
I am exploring narrative through the medium of a product line based around character design.
My target audience is very broad, and consists of young adults from the ages 19 to 35 and kids from the ages 6 to 12.
Here are a couple images that display the basic aesthetic and style that I am headed towards.

SET ME FREE

SNAKE EYES
Mixed Media
11" x 14"

These 2 images started out as figure studies, that I painted from a model at The Stables (a life drawing group on se 9th and Taylor, PDX). I took them home and turned them into illustrations and had lots of fun with adding plants and animals to the compositions!

Final Illustration project for 2010

This piece is based on the Andean Bear, also known as, The Spectacled Bear. It is the last of the remaining short faced bears, the rest are extinct! It is Native to South America, and it's survival has depended mostly on their ability to climb even the tallest of trees of the Andes. Unlike other bears, they are mostly vegetarian! They only have 5% meat in their diet! They are endangered due to:
A. Hunted by locals, due to belief that they will eat livestock (even though they rarely eat meat)
B. Their Gall Bladders are valued in traditional Chinese Medicine, and sold on the black market
C. Logging and Farming, has led to loss of habitat for the poor fuzzy guys.

This piece is Based on the Hoary Bat, the only living native mammal endemic to the Hawaiian Island. It has been severely endangered since 1970, due to:
A. loss of habitat; brought about by the land change to accomodate humanity in the 19th century
B. Deforestation; the forest was cut down to make room for houses and buildings
C. Pesticides; indirectly affecting the bats health

Some new sketches that I colored on Photoshop!

I Decided to take some of my quick vignette drawings from my sketchbook and do the coloring on Photoshop! It was a lot of fun experimenting with color and color gradients to get a nice clean finish, that is nearly impossible to do by hand. These two make me happy :D
